Dance does not exist in isolation, it is shaped by the environments that nurture or constrain it. Beyond the beauty seen on stage lies a complex ecosystem of training systems, cultural expectations, and economic realities that define a dancer’s life. Through my ongoing research comparing the living and working conditions of Chinese and international dancers, I explore how social values, education, and opportunity influence artistic growth. This project seeks to uncover the unseen stories behind performance, the fatigue, passion, and perseverance that sustain the art form. By understanding the environments that shape dancers, we can begin to create spaces where artistry and well-being coexist in balance.
This study examines the disparities in living and working conditions among dancers in China, more specifically, Nanjing, and abroad to highlight how cultural, economic, and institutional factors affect their well-being in the global dance market. Mainly based on interviews of Chinese dancers, the study collected qualitative data from dance studio principals, teachers, students, and performers who have dance experiences in multiple countries. Secondary resources are taken from websites to compare international situations. The findings reveal that most Chinese dancers face challenges such as early specialization, limited career promotion opportunities, and little social protection systems, while international dancers benefit from diversified education pathways, artistic freedom, and societal recognition. Although China has being investing in arts education in recent years, systemic challenges, such as inequal evaluation standards and undervaluation of dance as a profession, still constrain dancer’s long-term development. By comparing Chinese dancer’s living conditions with global practices, this paper further proposes strategies to enhance dancer’s welfare, sustainability, and cultural recognition in China. It seeks to promote equity in the increasingly interconnected performing arts landscape.
